(c. 61–47 BC)
Elder son of Ptolemy XII and possibly Cleopatra VI Tryphaena. He succeeded jointly with his sister and wife, Cleopatra VII, but he soon fell out with her, and civil war broke out between the siblings. The situation was changed by the arrival of Iulius Caesar, who soon supported Cleopatra. The king was defeated in battle against Roman forces and apparently drowned in the Nile during the action in January 47 BC.
